Man behind ESA (Electronic Substance Abuse) is Jamie Blacker!
ESA was born at the beginning in 2002 in order to cross the threshold from one form of independent extreme music to another. Jamie Blacker up until this point had been writing music semi-professionally for years in various Black and Death Metal bands, working alongside and touring with acts throughout the UK.
Having decided to experiment in Dark Electronica in order to experience a different genre. ESA began to gain European and US notoriety for powerful live shows complete with live guitars, live beats and various surprise guest vocalist appearances. Coupled with a venomous and violent debut album 'Devotion Discipline and Denial' on premier American label 'Hive Records', slowly ESA had begun to claim it's own territory.
ESA's sound is always a hard one to pin down. Taking influences initially from predominantly European Rhythmical noise acts, the overall structures have developed and integrated countless influences from the broad spectrum of alternative and extreme music. The tone of ESA is harsh and oppressive, dripping with destructive and corroded grooves whilst still emanating sub conscious melodies and a strong sense of Spirituality. ESA's compositions are undoubtedly threatening and offensive floor stomping club tunes but also twist and churn enough to warrant more attentive listening.
Now on Tympanik Audio based in Chicago, the 3rd ESA album has just been released and confidently promises to cause a stir in scene and crosses new boundries. Managing to somehow bridge the gap between the lovingly lapped up industrial anthems of today and the jet black opressiveness of ESA's new forward thinking sound. 'The Sea & the Silence' is out now via the Tympanik website and many other respected distribution sites.
Arturs began his musical activity in 1998 with a metal band „Angel’s Tears”. The first publicly issued single was called „In The Circle Of Black Fire” - included in metal music compilation „Beneath The Gravestone Vol. 1”. In 1999 synths and programming gradually emerged in between vocals and guitars and in 2000 the project came forward with a new single „Heresy” („Nine Inch Nails” cover version) Between 2002-2004 during one-man-band period, Arturs recorded new singles – “Funeral For My Baby”, “Lauskas”, “Your Light” and shot videos for these singles. Afterwards he recorded 3 EPs – “Your Light”, “Pelni” and “Lenore’s Dreams”. In the beginning of 2005 an experimental song “Zem Sarkanam Debesim”.
In 2005 Arturs decided to rename the project as “Diadema” - and moved further on in gothic industrial and e.b.m. direction with additives of industrial rock and metal designating the outcome as „decaDance rock”. In collaboration with "Neglectad Fields" guitarists Herman and Sergej, they recorded several tracks and shot several videos. After years of silence in 2006 Arturs resumed his musical activities under another project name.
LENORAS SAPŅI (Lenore's Dreams) is a harsher continuation of Arturs' musical idiom that has now evolved into a dark electronic fusion of aggrotech and rhythmic noise designated as 'biopunk'. The project name has been inspired from E. A. Poe's poem, character Lenore - "the queenliest dead that ever died so young." The musical material in has in fact been mutated and redeveloped out of his above listed sonic heritage, some even way back from 1999. As for the beginnings of the project, according to the author, it has been arround for years, however as his private audio exploration that has been named and disintered only recently due a multi-artist poetic audio visual project 'Neona Varti' which Arturs participated in with his own videos and music in 2004, for the first time giving this necromantic denomination to his output.
The event is supported by Europa City Hotel Riga, TVNET, ORB, Radio 2 (ee) and Radio Naba.
